THE OLD SCHOOL OF GHOST HUNTING

Victorian Magic - Introducing...

Daniel Dunglas Home

Born: 20th March 1833 - Scotland UK
Died: 21st June 1886 (aged 53)

Daniel Dunglas Home was regarded as the most influential medium of modern times. He was best known for his remarkable séances - demonstrating direct voice phenomena (the ability to let spirits audibly speak), trance speaking (the ability to allow spirits speak through oneself), clairvoyance (ability to see spirits) and physical mediumship (the reality of spirit through the production of various physical phenomena such as: levitation, apports and transfiguration).

Daniel took his psychic abilities in a unique direction. He decided to do the opposite of what was being done elsewhere, showing the public that he had nothing to hide. His séances were held in bright lit rooms instead of the dark and he encouraged the sitters to hold his hands and feet to prove that he was not somehow manipulating objects.

Daniel produced ghostly hands that were reported to have shook hands with the audience, raps on demand, spectral lights, table tilting, levitation and spectral music.
He claimed the phenomena was made possible by friendly spirits whom he had no control of.

Daniel proved to be very suspicious of any medium who claimed to hold a psychic ability that he did not possess himself and after attending many séances he regarded most mediums as frauds.

In 1877 his book, Lights and Shadows of Spiritualism detailed the conjuring tricks employed by false mediums.

Daniel worked closely with many Psychical Researchers, in particular, Sir William Crookes who stated 'Mr Daniel Dunglas Home is the most remarkable'.

In 1873, after 2 years of testing with Crookes, Daniel announced he was retiring due to tiredness and ill health. In 1886 Daniel died of tuberculosis.

Following his death many explanations were given about how he actually accomplished his extraordinary abilities through trickery. No theory was ever proven.
